The Drought

This is one arm of Lake Conroe – Devastated! The drought is really evident here. We carry on with our lives, watering our plants and taking long showers and don’t really understand how bad it is until you see this. On a positive note, it was fun walking across the dry lake bed by moonlight!

Engagement Day Kiss on Main Street

Now this is the kind of portrait I can sink my teeth into! This young couple chose a wonderful theme for their engagement shoot! It didn’t hurt that he was a sailor. The story of the original kiss V-J day in Times Square is really interesting (READ ABOUT IT HERE) In choosing a location for this – I knew it had to be downtown. But at 6pm on a Monday, I wondered how we’d get that “middle of the street” look – then it came to me. Thank god for the light rail!

The Cat & the Squirrel

During a recent engagement session at Hermann Park, my clients and I came across a black cat in “stalk” mode. It’s always interesting watching a cat do this, moving without moving in a way….This cat being black, was hidden in the shadows very well. We decided to stick around and see how this played out, not expecting what was about happen. *Spoiler Alert* the Squirrel gets away…

Thievery Corporation at House of Blues Houston

This was an exceptionally good concert. I had never been to the House of Blues before, so starting out in the Foundation Room I was a pretty good way to begin. As I walked into this dark place adorned with Persian rugs and Eastern tapestries – my jaw dropped. I didn’t care if I looked like a rookie – it was too cool not to exclaim ‘Wow’ and wide eyes.

The crowd was – amazing. The music – as I have been a fan for as long as they have been around Thievery Corporation have as just much stage presence as they do diversity.

Nice.

The Savoy Hotel : Not the explosion I was hoping for

I heard two words: “building” and “demolished”

That’s all I needed. I did a horribly lacking amount of research to get the start time. 12 midnight.

“Well, I have to wake up at 6am for an early shoot – but how many times do you get to photograph one of the oldest buildings in downtown Houston go kaput?”

Plus I had an advantage on vantage point – 19th floor balcony of the Houston House Apartments. The ingredients are all there – camera, tripod, building, view, etc.

My lack of research? Well, with more research I may have found that they weren’t going to implode or explode the building with all the magic of C4 – like a glorious end to an old icon. No, they were going to tear it down with a crane – a slow, painful death. One we don’t have time to watch. One that doesn’t do much for the camera.

At the stroke of midnight – they started laying down planks for the crane. That’s about it.

At 2am my interest went in REVERSE. Feeling sleepy and defeated I gave up – but decided to create an explosion of my own:

Tree Installation at One Park Place

I photographed the installation of a bunch of huge palm trees onto the 8th floor of the new One Park Place Apartment building adjacent to Discovery Green. They had to build these monstrous cranes to hoist them up and block off 4 streets!

Miss Texas USA 2009

I had the great opportunity to photograph Brooke Daniels, Miss Texas USA 2009. She was so nice! A very fun shoot – I loved hearing her story about throwing the first pitch at the Astros/Reds game. Birds!

The Birds (1963) is a suspense film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the short story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier. These birds fortunately did not attack me – but if they decided to, it would have made one heck of an interesting news story! Thousands of them kept congregating at this one tree, I have never seen so many in one place. One hand clap made the sky turn black.

Lake Somerville Trailway: Part I

I am so ready to get back into a rythm of spending true time with nature! Backpacking can be one of the most rewarding hobbies – it’s healthy, full of entertainment, spiritual and doesn’t really cost very much! That’s why I have started the Houston Backpacking Network! The inaugural trek is going to be at Lake Somerville Trailway – just a day hike of 13 miles with an overnight. A walk in the park!
